妻のイングリッドとの間には、リーケ (27) とショールド (23) という 2 人の子供がいます。 私たちはオランダ西部、ロッテルダムとハーグに近いズーテルメールに住んでいます。 これは、私たちが海面下約 3 メートルの場所に住んでいることを意味します。

EDUCATION
I studied at Technical Universities within the Netherlands (‘Port Technology’) and in the United Kingdom (‘M.Sc. International Transport’). Before my professional career at Rijkswaterstaat I got training for air traffic controller at Schiphol Airport, Amsterdam.
PERSONAL
Together with my wife Ingrid we have two children, Lieke (27) and Sjoerd (23). We live in Zoetermeer, in the western part of the Netherlands, near Rotterdam and the Hague. This means we live approximately 3 meters below sea level.
EXPERIENCE
Since 1994 I work with Rijkswaterstaat, the operational department of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management in the Netherlands.
Apart of being a project manager of a diversity of projects my main interest in Storm Surge Barriers started in 2004. As manager of a water related District in the Rotterdam Region I had the responsibility over 80-100 staff that managed the coastline, the dredging of the port of Rotterdam and the maintenance and operations of four Storm Surge Barriers within this region. Since then, and still, I’m Leader of the Operational Team of the Maeslant- and Hartel Barriers and led the Operational Team when we’ve closed these barrier for storm in 2007 and 2018.
Since 2014 I’m the Senior Advisor/Expert on Storm Surge Barriers for Rijkswaterstaat. Within this role I support both the Board of Rijkswaterstaat and employees in implementing the Knowledge Strategy for Storm Surge Barriers to assure Rijkswaterstaat is equipped for its flood defense tasks. To support and strengthen this ambition I, together with my colleague Andy Batchelor at the Thames Barrier in London, developed I-STORM. This is the International Network of Storm Surge Barriers in which we share knowledge and experiences worldwide. Since every Storm Surge Barrier in the world is one-of-a-kind it’s our believe that we need to share this scarce knowledge and experience worldwide to actively learn from each other. Both from the perspective of maintenance and operations as well in incorporating these lessons learned into new design.

The aim of I-STORM is to bring the storm surge barrier community of practice together
to seek the very best standards of operation, management and performance
in order to reduce the risk of severe flooding to people, property and places around the world.
